Hi Malte,

At this point its pretty hard to ask WHY something exists in a current form.

If you have a proposal to change it, just explain the advantages of making the change, and we can discuss it. I doubt even the original authors of that code, if we could find them, remember why it was designed that way.

My "WHY" is mainly for educational purposes. If it is considered a relict, then I can leave it as is (it works, so no need to change). But maybe someone did for a purpose and in this case I would be interested in the why, to learn about situations when it makes sense to follow down that path.
